Olympic World Cup 2017 - Olympic Classes Regatta - Miami FL, USA - Final results, Victory for McNay/Hughes USA

 Olympic World Cup 2017 - Olympic Classes Regatta - Miami FL, USA - Final results, Victory for McNay/Hughes USA Moderate winds prevailed on Biscayne Bay also during the 470, Laser and Finn Medal Races during the last day of the Miami Olympic Classes Worldcup Regatta.
Jorge Zarif BRA was the premature winner in the Finns before the final race already. In the duel for the ranks 2 and 3, it was Ben Cornish GBR who had the upperhand on Anders Pedersen NOR. In the 470 men, Stuart McNay/David Hughes USA defended the 1st place. Winning the Medal Race, Isozaki/Takayanagi JPN moved up on rank 2 ahead of Mantis/Kagialis GRE 3rd. A 2nd rank in the 470 women Medal Race was good enough for Afrodite Zegers/Anneloes Van Veen NED for the overall victory ahead of Weguelin/McIntyre GBR on the 2nd position with a 2 points' backlog.  Laser - Olympic Worldcup 2017 - Miami FL, USA - Final results The first 2017 Olympic Classes Worldcup Regatta was concluded yesterday with the Medal Races of five classes, among them the two Laser fleets.
Jean-Baptiste Bernaz FRA was the premature winner in the Lasers Standard before the last race already, and in the final rankings, the 2nd-placed Pavlos Kontides CYP has now a 55 points' backlog ! In the English duel for rank 3, it was Lorenzo Chiavarini GBR who relegated the World Champions Nick Thompson GBR on rank 4.
The gaps between the Laser Radial women was such, that no changes occurred in the Medal Race. Vasileia Karachaliou GRE won also the Medal Race and celebrated her first Worldcup victory with an 18 points' advantage. Evi Van Acker BEL and Mathilde de Kerangat FRA completed the podium.

The only North Americans in the Medal Races were Erika Reineke USA and Charlie Buckingham USA, both finishing on rank 7.

Olympic World Cup 2017 - Olympic Classes Regatta - Miami FL, USA - Day 5

The first five Medal Races of the Miami Worldcup event were completed yesterday in light winds. In the other five events, the Qualification Series ended with 2 races in each class.
In the 49ers, the newly composed team Dylan Fletcher/Stuart Bithell GBR were the premature winners before the Medal Race already. Bildstein/Hussl AUT and Botin/Lopez ESP took Silver and Bronze. Living up to the expectations were the Olympic Champions Martine Grael/Kahena Kunze BRA in the 49ersFX, winning the Medal Race as well and ending up as superior winners overall ahead of Agerup/Agerup NOR and Travascio/Branz ARG. No change on the podium in the Nacras 17 where Ben Saxton/Nicola Groves GBR finished first in front of Tom Phipps/Nicola Boniface GBR and the newcomers Nico Delle-Karth/Laura Schöfegger AUT. Ranks 1 and 2 for France in the RS:X men windsurfers with Louis Giard FRA and Pierre Le Coq FRA. Mateo Sanz-Lanz SUI earned Bronze. Yunxiu Lu CHN defended her first position in the RS:X women windsurfers ahead of Marina Alabau ESP and Manjia Zheng CHN.
Today, the Medal Races of the 470, the Lasers and the Finns are on the program. Premature winner in the Finns is Jorge Zarif BRA with two race wins yesterday. Ben Cornish GBR and Anders Pedersen NOR will fight for the remaining medals today. In the 470 men, Stuart McNay/David Hughes USA and 8 points back Mantis/Kagialis GRE are on top of the rankings. Isozaki/Takayanagi JPN are on a solid path to Bronze.

 Laser - Olympic Worldcup 2017 - Miami FL, USA - Day 5 The Qualification Series at the Miami Worldcup event ended yesterday for the two Laser Classes in shifty light winds.
Inspite of his two worst race results (8/34), the leader Jean-Baptiste Bernaz FRA remained clearly on top in the Lasers-Standard with a 39 points' lead taking the overall victory prematurely. Pavlos Kontides CYP and 12 points behind Nick Thompson GBR wil fight for the remaining medals today.
In the Lasers Radial, the medal winners are practically firm: Vasdileia Karachaliou GRE is the clear leader with a 16 points' advantage on Evi Van Acker BEL. 17 points back, Mathilde de Kerangat FRA will take Bronze.

 Olympic World Cup 2017 - Olympic Classes Regatta - Miami FL, USA - Day 4 Five classes terminated their qualification series of the Miami Worldcup yesterday in light winds, and today, the first Medal Races are on the program.
In some classes, the final winners are already known. The leader in the RS:X men windsurfers Louis Giard FRA has a 37 points' advantage on Pierre Le Coq FRA. Another 7 points back is Mateo Sanz-Lanz SUI on rank 3. In the Lasers Standard, Jean-Baptiste Bernaz FRA is 31 points ahead of the chasers. Pavlos Kontides CYP and Philipp Buhl GER 2 points back will be fighting for Silver and Bronze today. In the 49ers, Dylan Fletcher/Stuart Bithell GBR are the premature winners with a 21 points' lead over Bildstein/Hussl AUT, who will have to defend Silver against Sylvan/Anjemark SWE one point behind.
In all other classes, the final decision has still to be made. Good chances have Martine Grael/Kahena Kunze BRA with a 17 points' advantage on Ragna und Maja Agerup NOR in the 49ersFX. On a safe way to victory is also Jorge Zarif BRA in the Finns 12 points ahead of Ben Cornish GBR. 16 points is the lead of Vasileia Karachaliou GRE in the Lasers Radial. Evi Van Acker BEL and Mathilde de Kerangat FRA 4 points behind will duel for Silver and Bronze. Last but not least, Yunxiu Lu CHN 14 points ahead will most probably celebrate her first Worldcup win. Marina Alabau ESP on rank 2 has an 11 points' advantage on Isobel Hamilton GBR.
The other classes, sailing their last fleet races today, are more disputed. Stuart McNay/David Hughes USA lead in the 470 men 4 points in front of Mantis/Kagialis GRE and even Isozaki/Takanayagi JPN 9 points behind on rank 3 have some chances for the overall victory. Only two points is the lead of Afrodite Zegers/Anneloes Van Veen NED in the 470 women on Weguelin/McIntyre GBR. In the Nacra 17, Ben Saxton/Nicola Grove BR are 9 points ahead of Tom Phipps/Nicola Boniface GBR. Nico Delle-Karth/Laura Schöfegger AUT, newcomers to the class, are ready to grasp the Bronze Medal in their first Worldcup event.

Laser - Olympic Worldcup 2017 - Miami FL, USA - Day 3, Buckingham USA now 4th

 Laser - Olympic Worldcup 2017 - Miami FL, USA - Day 3, Buckingham USA now 4th Light but gusty winds made sailing difficult on the third day of the Miami Worldcup event. Both Laser classes sailed again two races each.
In the Lasers Radial, Vasileia Karachaliou GRE replaced Evi Van Acker BEL on top but she is only one point ahead. Mathilde de Kerangat FRA defended rank 3 but she is already 24 points behind the leader.
Well performing is Jean-Baptiste Bernaz FRA winning both heats in the Lasers Standard and increasing his lead on 9 points. Pavlos Kontides CYP - twice on 2nd yesterday - and Nick Thompson GBR are the first chasers.

 Olympic World Cup 2017 - Olympic Classes Regatta - Miami FL, USA - Day 2 The full program was completed for all classes on the second day of the Miami Worldcup event in a moderate seabreeze around 10 kn.
In the Finns, the new leader is Jorge Zarif BRA with the day ranks 1 and 2 with a 3 points' advantage on Alican Kaynar TUR.
Dylan Fletcher/Stuart Bithell GBR dominated in the 49ers with the ranks 2/1/1 taking the overall lead. The newcomers Robert Scheidt/Gabriel Borges BRA finished for the first time in the top-10 and moved up on rank 18 overall. Dominance by Martine Grael/Kahenqa Kunze BRA in the 49ersFX now 7 points ahead of Victoria Travascio/Maria Branz ARG.
In the 470 men, the routiniers Mantis/Kagialis GRE are now first with the day ranks 1 and 2, but Schmid/Mähr AUT on the 2nd place are only one point behind. In the 470 women, Zegers/Van Veen NED defended the first position with Cornudella/Lopez ESP and Weguelin/McIntyre GBR tied on the 2nd place only one point behind.
Tied are the leaders Lorenzo Bressani/Caterina Banti ITA and Tom Phipps/Nicola Bonifaci GBR in the Nacra 17. The former 49er helmsman Nico Delle-Karth AUT with Laura Schöfegger AUT as crew moved up on rank 3.
In the windsurfers, Kiran Badloe NED took the lead in the RS:X men, and Yunxiu Lu CHN is the new leader in the RS:X women.

 Laser - Olympic Worldcup 2017 - Miami FL, USA - Day 2 The Olympic Classes Worldcup in Miami continued yesterday in a moderate seabreeze around 10 kn. The Laser fleets sailed two races each.
Jean-Baptiste Bernaz FRA has taken the overall lead in the Lasers Standard with the day ranks 1 and 2 at equal points with Karl-Martin Rammö EST on rank 2. New on rank 3 is Nick Thompson GBR.
In the Lasers Radial, Evi Van Acker BEL is now on top with two bullets yesterday. Vasileia Karachaliou GRE on the 2nd place has qa 3 points' backlog. Mathilde de Kerangat FRA and Erika Reineke USA on the positions 3 and 4 are already 16 points behind.

Olympic World Cup 2017 - Olympic Classes Regatta - Miami FL, USA - Day 1

 Olympic World Cup 2017 - Olympic Classes Regatta - Miami FL, USA - Day 1 The first 2017 Olympic Classes Worldcup event began yesterday in Miami with a number of new teams, partly newcomers from other classes, starting a 2020 Olympic campaign.
The most famous athlete switching class is the five-time Olympic medalist Robert Scheidt BRA joined by Gabriel Borges BRA on a 49er. In their first race on the skiff, they occupy rank 22 after 3 races. The surprising leaders in the 49er are the newcomers Rual/Amoros FRA one point ahead of Fletcher/Bithell GBR. Favorites however are leading in the 49ersFX with the Olympic Champions Martine Grael/Kahena Kunze BRA.
Also in the Finns, two experienced helmsmen are on top with Alican Kaynar TUR and Jorge Zarif BRA.
In the 470 men, Doi/Kimura JPN are first followed by Ferrari/Calabro ITA and Mantis/Kagialis GRE. The best 470 women team were Zegers/Van Veen NED, 2 points in front of Weguelin/McIntyre GBR.
Lorenzo Bressani/Catarina Branti ITA are on top of the interim's rankings in the Nacra 17 ahead of Tom Phipps/Nicola Boniface GBR.
In the RS:X men windsurfers, Thomas Goyard FRA and Kieran Badloe NED jointly hold rank 1 at equal points, and in the RS:X women, the top position is shared by Hei Man Chan CHN and Emma Wilson GBR. See separate news for Lasers.

 Laser - Olympic Worldcup 2017 - Miami FL, USA - Day 1 The first 2017 Olympic Classes Worldcup event began yesterday in Miami.
Finishing 1 and 4, Karl-Martin Rammö EST, a new name, took the lead in the Lasers Standard ahead of Nick Thompson GBR and Tomas Pellejero ARG. Philipp Buhl GER followed on rank 4. Some of the favorites had a rather slow start such as Pavlos Kontides CYP as 22nd and Tonci Stipanovic CRO on 29th.
In the Lasers Radial, Vasileia Karachaliou GRE is on top ahead of the experienced Evi Van Acker BEL and Mathilde de Kerengeat FRA.
The much awaited comeback of the Olympic Champion Anna Tunnicliffe USA was unfortunately cancelled, due to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)’s denial of her expedited request to return to active status in January of 2017. Instead. she has been cleared to compete starting on July 6, 2017. Tunnicliffe had the full support of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), World Sailing and US Sailing in her effort to receive an exemption and return to active competition this week (see details in Scuttlebutt).
