Laser Standard - World Championship 2017 - Split CRO - Final results - Gold for Pavlos Kontides CYP, Barnard and Buckingham USA 13th and 15th

 Laser Standard - World Championship 2017 - Split CRO - Final results - Gold for Pavlos Kontides CYP, Barnard and Buckingham USA 13th and 15th The second thunderstorm of the week at the Laser World Championships passing over Split CRO held the fleet on shore, destroying the gradient wind. The following light and unstable Eastwind did not allow to start racing on the final day of the event.
Pavlos Kontides CYP is therefore the new Laser World Champion. In 2012, Kontides was the first Cypriot athlete to win a an Olympic Medal. He has been training with the most successful Croate team for years and capitalized now on the experiences gained on the 'local' waters. The Olympic Champion Tom Burton AUS earned Silver with 15 points' backlog. Only one point behind followed Matthew Wearn AUS on the 3rd place. Philipp Buhl GER on 4th missed a medal by 6 pts. Jean-Baptiste Bernaz FRA, leader during the whole week, finished down on the 7th position. Chris Barnard USA is 13th, Charlie Buckingham USA 15th.

Laser Standard - World Championship 2017 - Split CRO - Day 5, Barnard and Buckingham USA 13th and 15th

 Laser Standard - World Championship 2017 - Split CRO - Day 5, Barnard and Buckingham USA 13th and 15th The sailing conditions on the second day of the Laser Standard Worlds' Final Series were quite different with a 14-16 kn wind and big waves. The Goldfleet completed three, the Silver- and Bronzefleet two races.
After his dive from rank 1 on rank 7 the day before yesterday, Pavlos Kontides CYP came back strongly with the ranks 1/2/5 and reclaimed the first place overall 15 (!) points ahead of the Olympic Champion Tom Burton AUS. Another points behind is Matthew Wearn AUS on rank 3. Philipp Buhl GER on rank 4 has still an option on a medal. Chris Barnard USA and Charlie Buckingham USA 2 pts behind are on the rank 13 and 15.

Laser Standard - World Championship 2017 - Split CRO - Day 4, Chris Barnard USA 22nd

 Laser Standard - World Championship 2017 - Split CRO - Day 4, Chris Barnard USA 22nd The first three Final Series races, the fleets racing on Gold and Silver rounds, were held at the Laser Worlds in Split yesterday in light winds.
With the ranks 2/1/10, Jean-Baptiste Bernaz FRA took the overall lead 2 pts ahead of Matthew Wearn AUS, and another 2 pts back the Olympic Champion Tom Burton AUS, best of the day (1/1/5). Pavlos Kontides CYP had a bad day with the ranks 1/dnf/26 and dropped on rank 9. Chris Barnard USA is 22nd.

 Laser Standard - World Championship 2017 - Split CRO - Day 3, Barnard USA 19th The Laser Standard Worlds in Split CRO continued yesterday with two races sailed in a 20 kn wind. Pavlos Kontides CYP stayed on top of the rankings with another bullet. Three points behind follows the trio Matthew Wearn AUS, Jean-Baptiste Bernaz FRA and Sam Meech NZL. Chris Barnard USA in now 19th, Robert Davis CAN 55th.

 Laser Standard - World Championship 2017 - Split CRO - Day 2, Barnard USA 22nd The 147 participants at the Laser Worlds had to wait for wind until 15 hrs p.m. UTC to start to the only race of the day in light winds with Pavlos Kontides CYP - winner of all three heats of his Group so far -, Matthew Wearn AUS and Eliott Hanson GBR on rank 1. In the overall rankings, Kontides CYP leads with a 4 points' advance on Sam Meech NZL. Sergey Komissarov RUS is new on rank 3, Jean-Baptiste Bernaz FRA is now 4th. Chris Barnard USA advanced on the 22nd position with a 2nd race rank in his Group. Robert Davis CAN is 62nd.

Laser Standard - World Championship 2017 - Split CRO - Day 1, Barnard USA 37th, Davis CAN 51st

 Laser Standard - World Championship 2017 - Split CRO - Day 1, Barnard USA 37th, Davis CAN 51st Light and variable winds between 6 and 10 kn prevailed on the first day of the Laser Standard World Championship in Split CRO and the 147 participants' fleet, split in three Groups, sailed 2 races each.
The Olympic medalist Pavlos Kontides CYP won both heats of his Group and took the overall interim's lead ahed of Jean-Baptiste Bernaz FRA, twice on 2nd. The 3rd place is shared by Sam Meech NZL, Giovanni Coccoluto ITA and Lorenzo Chiavarini GBR. Some favorites, among them Tonci Stipanovic CRO (a 17th race rank) and the defending Champion Tom Burton AUS (a 21st place) had already their first downers. Chris Barnard USA is 37th, Robert Davis CAN 51st.

 Laser Standard - World Championship 2017 - Split CRO - Start today, with NorAm participants After the Practice Race of yesterday, the Laser Standard World Championship in Split CRO will have its first races today. 148 participants from 52 nations are on the entry. There are not many sports who have such a global representation on the starting grid ! Among the favorites are the Olympic Champion and defending Champion Tom Burton AUS, Matthew Wearn AUS with a convincing performance this year, the Olympia Bronze winner Sam Meech NZL, Jean-Baptiste Bernaz FRA as well as the strong Croatian team lead by Tonci Stipanovic CRO, sailing on his home waters.
