Eco Open 60 Velux 5 Oceans Race Leg 4 Day 16 Derek Hatfield CAN ends Brad Van Liew's USA winning streak in the timed runs
The four participants of the Velux 5 Oceans Race have been sailing for 16 days in their Ocean Sprint 4 from Punta del Este URU to Charleston USA. Derek Hatfield CAN has moved one step closer to shooting up the VELUX 5 OCEANS leaderboard after winning the Ocean Sprint 4 timed run. The expert solo sailor, a veteran of the 2002 VELUX 5 OCEANS (then known as the Around Alone) as well as the 2008 Vendée Globe, shot through the speed gates set between the latitudes 5°S and 5°N in two days, 13 hours and 43 minutes to claim the full three bonus points. The Eco Open 60 are already in the Northern Hemisphere but still 1772 miles from the port of destination. Zbigniew '‘Gutek'’ Gutkowski, second overall, is heading for port after the forestay on his Eco 60 yacht. Although the rig is secure, the damage has forced Gutek, who was lying fourth in ocean sprint four, to turn his boat round and head for Fortaleza on the northern coast of Brazil to carry out the vital repairs. The report.
