IMOCA Open 60 Vendee Globe Day 58 high traffic off Cape Horn
Tonight UTC within a few hours, seven teams of the closely sailing chasing fleet rounded Cape Horn at the most southern point of the Americas. Benjamin Dutreux FRA ('OMNIA') on rank 5 is 645nm behind the still leading Yannik Bestaven FRA ('Maître Coq'). Louis Burton FRA ('Bureau Vallée 2') has reduced the gap on Dutreux to 17nm. 100nm behind is Jean Le Cam FRA ('Yes we Cam') in 7th, just ahead of Maxime Sorel FRA ('V and B Moyenne'), Giancarlo Pedote ITA ('Prsymian'), and Boris Herrmann GER ('SeaExplorer'). In the gale force winds on the approach to Cape Horn, Herrmann tore the mainsail and is now waiting for more moderate conditions for repair. Isabelle Joschke FRA/GER ('MACSF') however had to note irreparable damage to the keel hydraulics, and she can no longer use the swing keel, reducing her speed by up to 30%. At the top, Yannick Bestaven FRA ('Maître Coq') is continuously pulling away. Today, entering the high of St.Helena, he will be slowing down a lot. Charlie Dalin FRA ('Apivia') was 235nm behind this morning UTC. Thomas Ruyant FRA ('LinkedOut') was the only one to hold directly north and benefitting from better winds, he might reduce his deficit of 350nm for now. Damien Séguin FRA ('Groupe Apicil') in 4th place remains 100nm behind Ruyant. ----- The race tracker and the reports.
