470 - World Championship 2021 - Vilamoura POR - Day 5

Saturday, March 13, 2021
The focus for the USA sailing community was obviously on the 470 Women with three teams fighting for the last USA Olympic 2020 ticket. Hopes were emerging for the Cowles sisters finishing 5th and making 13 points good on Barnes/Dallman-Weiss in race 10. But race 11 made everything clear for Nikole Barnes/Lara Dallman-Weiss (St. Francis YC/New York YC) finishing in 3rd and qualifying for the Medal Race with rank 7 overall. The young Carmen and Emma Cowles (Larchmont YC) performed again well in the last race with 6th place, but at the end of the Championship, 13 points were missing on the merited winners of the USA Tokyo trials. The U-flag start disqualification in race 9 was most likely killing for the Cowles. Atlantic and Nora Brugman (Shelter Island YC) finished the Worlds on rank 19 among the 27 teams. ----- In the 470 Men, Stuart McNay/David Hughes USA (Trevor Moore Foundation) on rank 6 will participate in the Medal of today as well. After a splendid 3rd rank in race 10, Shawn Harvey/August Dale USA (Oyster Bay 470 Team) moved up to the 25th final place in their first World Championship. ----- In the 470 Mixed, Louisa Nordstrom/Trevor Bornarth USA (Oyster Bay 470 Team) finished in rank 13. ----- The Report of US Sailing. -------------------- The summary of all results: ----- In a 12kn wind, the qualifications for the Medal Races of today (www.sailing-news.com will broadcast live from 12h UTC) were completed yesterday with two races. ----- Anton Dahlberg/Fredrik Bergström SWE will start the Medal Race with an 11-point lead over Diogo and Pedro Costa POR, having secured the last Olympic berth for Tokyo with their 2nd interim place. ----- Four teams still have a chance to win the women's title. Silvia Mas-Depares/Patricia Cantero ESP are now leading with 3 points ahead of Afrodite Zegers/Lobke Berkhout NED. Berta/Caruso ITA (7 points behind) and Mills/McIntyre GBR (13 points behind) also still have medal chances. ----- In the Mixed 470 (new Olympic discipline from 2024), Gil Cohen/Noam Hombri ISR now lead over Maria Marchesini/Bruno Festo ITA by 15 points. ----- All rankings, the Daily Report and the Video of the Day.
