IMOCA Open 60 Vendee Globe Les Sables d'Olonne FRA Day 17
The leading group has reached the zone influenced by the St-Helena anticyclone with lighter and unconstant winds yesterday evening. The skippers try to avoid the lull patches with different strategies: the clear leader Armel Le Cléac'h FRA ('Banque Populaire') is going East, while Jean-Pierre Dick FRA ('Virbac-Paprec') tries an attack more East. This trial and error phase enlarges the gaps between the boats, and the 2nd-ranked François Gabart FRA ('Macif') is now already 112 miles behind Le Cléac'h. Alex Thomson GBR ('Hugo Boss') is moved up on rank 3 with a 200 miles backlog, while his 'race companion' during a few days, Bernard Stamm SUI ('Cheminées Poujoulat'), is still on rank 5, 224 miles behind. The first boats will not reach the Roaring Forties before three or four days, and the tricky conditions might well reposition the boats or even produce some cruicial gaps before they enter the 'freeway to the East'.
