Olympic Classes Trofeo Princesa Sofia Palma ESP Final results, podium for McNay/Hughes 2nd in 470
The first important Olympic Classes event in Europe was concluded yesterday with the Medal Races.
In the 470 men, Matthew Belcher/Will Ryan AUS have been the premature winners after a flawless Qualification phase, but they did not held back in the last race, finishing 2nd yesterday. McNay/Hughes USA, winner of the Medal Race, made everything clear for rank 2 as Mantis/Kagialis GRE were 8th only and remain on rank 3 overall. The 470 women top group was closely together and the performance in the Medal Race made the separation in favour of Agnieszka Skrzypulec/Irmina Mrozek POL – rank 2 yesterday – who celebrated their first important international victory. Oliveira/Barbachan BRA and Seabright/Carpenter GBR complete the podium.
Also for the first time on top of an important event were Ryan Seaton/Matt McGovern IRL starting to the 49er Medal Race with a big lead. Outteridge/Jensen AUS and Botin/Lopez ESP follow on the ranks 2 and 3. Annemiek Bekkering/Anette Duetz DEN clearly leading in the 49ersFX covered their only opponent Jena-Mai Hansen/Katja Salskov DEN during the whole race sailing them down the rankings and finished with a 13 points lead at the end of the day. Bronze went to Tina Lutz/Susann Beucke GER. Paris Henken/Helena Scutt USA are 8th overall after an excellent 3rd place in the Medal Race.
In the Finns, Giles Scott GBR has suffered the first defeat for 4 years, as the abandoned race because of equipment failure weighted too heavily. Josh Junior NZL won with a perfect series of top finishes ahead of Scott and Tapiro Nirkko FIN on 3rd. Billy Besson/Marie Riou FRA outperformed the rest of the Nacra 17 and won not only the in the class rankings but also the Trofeo Princesa Sofia as the undisputed best team of the event. Zajac/Frank AUT and Norregaard/Viborg DEN complete the podium. Ramsay/Girke CAN finish the event on the 8th place.
No change on top of the RS:X windsurfers. Tom Squires GBR finished first in the men’s category ahead of Pawel Tarnowski POL and Byron Kokkalanis GRE. The first place in the women’s category went to Olga Maslivets RUS ahead of Flavia Tartaglini ITA and Lilian de Geus NED. Marion Lepert USA crowned her excellent Palma performance with a victory in the Medal Race. She remaines 10th overall, the best US windsurfing result for quite some time.
