Stage two of the World Match Race Tour, the Congressional Cup in California, began yesterday with a 6-8 kn SW wind providing classic Long Beach conditions. Four Qualifying flights were pulled off smartly, until a sudden wind shift put racers practically on the beach. After a lengthy postponement the wind shifted right again, and built to a stunning 20+ kn.
Nicolai Sehested DEN, racing in his first Congressional Cup, was the day’s best winning all 5 heats and leading with a 5-0 score. Phil Robertson NZL and Chris Steele NZL follow with 4-1 each on 2nd and 3rd, while Eric Monnin SUI, Bjorn Hansen SWE and Johnie Berntsson SWE are ranked 5th to 7th with a w/l record of 3-2. The negative news come from the World Champion Ian Williams GBR as backmarker of the fleet with a 0-5 score.
