Yesterday, the start to the 'Transat', the oldest solo skipper race across the Atlantic Ocean to New York, was given in Plymouth GBR. The entry list contains 3 trimarans of the Ultime category (80 foot +), 5 Multi-50 trimarans, 6 IMOCA Open 60 and 10 Class 40. As to expect, the big trimarans have already taken the command. Yves Le Blevec FRA with his 'Actual' is leading 2 miles ahead of Thomas Coville FRA ('Sodebo') and François Gabart FRA. In the Multi-50, Pierre Antoine FRA with his 'Olmix' is already 25 miles in front. The special interest goes to the Open 60, sailing the Transat as a test race for the Vendée Globe beginning in November this year. Four Open 60 of the latest generation, experimenting with the foiling technology are among the participants, such as Le Cléac'h FRA with his 'Banque Populaire' leading the fleet 6 miles ahead of Sébastien Josse FRA on 'Edmond de Rothschild'. First in the Class 40 is Phil Sharp GBR.
