IMOCA Open 60 - Vendée Globe 2016/17 - Day 16

The leader group maintained the high speeds around 20 kn benefitting from the very favorable conditions on the South Atlantic, heading directly to the Cape of Good Hope. Despite of the broken foil, the astonishing Alex Thompson GBR even extended his lead with another 10 nm to now 92 nm. On Friday, he will probably round the Cape of Good Hope in a new record 4 days faster as the previous best time ! Behind the 7 leading boats, the rest of the fleet is still stalling in the big anticyclone calms, loosing over 200 miles on the leading group. When rounding the most Southern point of Africa, the backlog of these boats will exceed 4 days. 'The great American' of Rich Wilson USA on rank 20 is 2'100 nm behind.
