IMOCA Open 60 Vendee Globe 2016/17 Day 40, Wilson USA 17th
After 40 days of close racing, the leading duo seems to split as in the low-wind zone between two weather systems, Armel Le Cléac'h FRA opted for the better strategy on a more southern course. He extended the lead on Alex Thompson GBR to 370 nm (roughly one day), and until the Cape Horn about one week away, this advantage may even double ! 1200 nm behind follows Jérémy Béyou FRA new on rank 3, but Paul Meilhat FRA is only 16 nm back. The second half of the now 22 boats' fleet approaching Cape Leeuwin on the Southwest point of Australia will encounter a 50 kn plus storm today. Rich Wilson USA still on rank 17 will live the fiercest hours of the race this evening.
