IMOCA Open 60 Vendee Globe 2016/17 Day 96, Wilson USA 14th
Eric Bellion FRA holding the 9th position in the approach to Les Sables d'Olonne with about 700 nm to go is challenge by a stormy westwind low pressure system on the North Atlantic with wind speeds of up to 70 kn. With no improvements predicted, he decided to limit the stress by deviating eastwards. Conrad Coleman NZL following on rank 10 could reduce his backlog on Bellion FRA to 180 nm during the past 24 hours. The participants behind are shaken by the rough upwind course as well. Rich Wilson USA, still on rank 14, having opted to sail North on the western edge of the course, has passed the Cape Verdes Island latitude. Today, Pieter Heerema NED will cross the Equator.
