Various classes - 49th Transpac Regatta Los Angeles - Honolulu, Start of the final wave with the fastest boats yesterday
Friday, July 7, 2017
Another perfect Southern California summer day yesterday yielded bluebird conditions for the third and final wave of starters for the 49th Transpac Race. Joining the 17 fastest monohulls, such as Jim Clarks' 'Comanche' with Ken Read and Stan Honey, were five ocean racing multihulls, with the MOD7s of Giovanni Soldini's 'Maserati' and Lloyd Thurnburg's 'Phaedo3', to set off on their 2225-mile odyssey to the finish in Honolulu. The breeze started at a light 6-8 knots, but quickly built up to 10-12 knots after the start allowing the fleet to speed towards their first – and only – mark of the course at the West End of Catalina.
