470 World Championship 2016 Buenos Aires ARG Day 1, ranks 1 and 3 overall for USA women
The 470 World Championship on the Rio de la Plata began yesterday with some delay waiting for wind in a light breeze. Both fleets completed two races each.
In the 470 men, Paul Snow-Hansen/Daniel Willcox NZL had an impressive first day winning both races. They lead with a 9 points' advance on Fantela/Marenic CRO. Zandona/Trani ITA and Barreiros/Curbelo ESP at equal points follow as 3rd. A good first race (rank 7) and a disappointing second race (23rd) brought Stu McNay/Dave Hughes USA on rank 12 overall. Jacob and Graeme Saunders CAN are 28th. The defending champions and favorites Belcher/Ryan AUS had a terrible day with a premature start disqualification and a 21st rank, and are 33rd overall.
In the 470 women, brilliant Anne Haeger/Briana Provancha USA took the lead with the day ranks 2 and 3, one point ahead of Wang/Huang CHN. But the challengers for the USA Rio selection, Bolger/Shevitz USA, remain close with rank 3 overall. Some favorites are also already under pressure, such as Lecointre/Defrance FRA (ufd/1) on rank 20 or Mills/Clarke GBR (ufd/21) as 33rd. Allie Surrette/Alexandra Ten Hove CAN are last with a premature start disqualification and an abandoned race.
