The Trofeo Princesa Sofia on Palma Bay begins today, the traditional opening of the European Olympic Classes season with 656 boats from 56 nations, including North Americans in the 470s (USA), 49ers (USA), Finn (USA, CAN), Laser Standard (6x USA, CAN MEX), Laser Radial (USA, CAN), Nacra-17 (PUR), RS:X men (USA) and RS:X women (USA). A special interest will go to the 470 debut of the 2016 World Sailing Youth Champions (sailed on 420s) Wiley Rogers/Jack Parkin USA. Starting another Olympic campaign, this time for Tokyo 2020, are the experienced Charlie Buckingham USA and Robert Davis CAN in the Lasers Standard as well as Erika Reineke USA and Brenda Bowskill CAN in the Lasers Radial.
According to the wind forecast, a fresh breeze from Northeast, veering to West during the afternoon will prevail. Racing can be followed with a live ticker.
